Good people make for the best of times
The other night I had a very entertaining talk with my roommate, and it got me to thinking how lucky I am in the friends I’m privileged enough to keep.
It began on the topic of Michael Moore’s newest film, Sicko, and the general state of healthcare in this nation. (We’re both on the same page with that one in that, yes, the healthcare system could certainly be improved, perhaps through the introduction of more socialist health policies. However, as with just about every one of Michael Moore’s films, his quite paradisal picture of similar programs in the United Kingdom, France, and Cuba needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The overall message is arguably a good one–that we should try and effect change to help the greatest number of individuals–but focusing on sob stories and carefully selecting only supportive evidence is an obvious ploy for shock value and ticket sales.)
In any case, we began there, but were quick to spiral off into discussions on the various social biases that construct our worldviews, religion, other political issues, and eventually (I kid you not) the origins of the universe and the meaning of human existence. It was less a debate than a lax conversation, as both Brian and I tend to have similar points of view, but it was still highly engaging, and continued until I glanced at the clock and saw that it was past 2AM (we’d started around 10PM).
Point being: that I can sit down from time to time and do something like this with my roommate is awesome! So many friends have horror story after horror story about terrible experiences with housemates, and every time I hear one of them I know that I’ve lucked out. In contrast, our apartment has a greater tendency to wax philosophical than dramatic, and our “arguments” generally occur over things as silly as proper word usage (such are the hazards of being an English major who likes to be right argue =P).
And then I leave the roommates (alas, those poor anti-social kids don’t get out too much, heh) and the people I get to goof off with are just as spectacular! Sometimes I feel karma is giving me an unfair portion of the goodness pie. But then, I’m not complaining.
Life, in other words, is good. Thanks to everyone who makes it so. You know who you are ;)
